Foundations

Before we get into creating the main image, let’s set down some fundamentals. First, I must decide on a perspective type and angle of attack – so I’ll look at different types of perspective. Then I’ll share with you my decisions about which points of view and fields of view to use before I can launch into my painting.

Creating things within an imaginary 3D space is less painful if you start with a concept, preferably a plan view from the visible sides. I usually make thumbnails for every aspect in the scene: layout, characters, buildings, colour and composition and I’ll try out different points of view until I decide what tells the story best. Now let’s get started…
