So, you’ve spent weeks working on a
personal project and it’s time to showcase your work. As we all know, getting
people to stand cooing around your monitor simply isn’t an option, your A4
printer doesn’t quite have the punch for exhibition quality and printing costs
are prohibitively expensive. Which means it’s time to invest in an A3 printer –
a number of models are now available but, unlike their A4 counterparts, there
is a considerable price increase so you want to make sure you’re getting some
serious quality for your money.
The Epson Stylus Photo R1800 is a flexible
A3+ sized printer that supports paper sizes from 10x15cm up to A3+ and even
prints directly on to CD surfaces, so you can make your portfolio disc even
more professional looking. Utilising eight individual colour cartridges,
including one specifically to add gloss, the R1800 claims a print speed for
10x8 photos with borders at 1,440x720 DPI in just 66 seconds. In the tests we
ran, printing an A3-sized 13MP image at 300 DPI took just under four minutes,
which is reasonably swift thanks to the USB 2.0 and FireWire connectivity, but
it was the quality of the image that impressed us more than the time taken.
Epson is well established in the inkjet
market and its development of new technologies has been generously incorporated
into the R1800. MicroPiezoT and Variable-sized Droplet Technology are employed
to cater for more fine detail areas of your images and the quality really
shows, with the R1800 providing the kind of results that would be more than
presentable in an exhibition situation.
You’ll be saving money by avoiding those
exorbitant printing costs, individual colours mean only empty cartridges need
replacing and paper costs are falling dramatically. The only problem is the
huge footprint such a printer demands, but then we can’t have everything…
