Getting Messy with Oils
Can oil painting smell sweet with Painter IX’s Oils and Artists’ Oils? By Jonny Duddle.
In part two of this series I’m going to
concentrate on Painter IX’s Oil variants. I’m hoping to work exclusively with
the Oils and Artists’ Oils. One of the features that most excited me when I
produced the first Chimpski illustration last month, was the way in which
Painter’s brushes blend and interact with the canvas and its existing colours.
In the past, I’ve experimented with Painter’s Oils and have found them
entertaining, if a little unwieldy. So I’m setting myself the challenge of
working exclusively in virtual Oils. I’m hoping that by doing this on my piece
I can achieve a traditional painted look.
I’m sticking with Chimpski for all three
images in this series and want to produce illustrations that run
chronologically. In the first workshop I produced a stamp design inspired by
Soviet propaganda art. In this workshop I’m going to look at Chimpski’s arrival
on the moon. A little known event in the space race, perhaps, but a giant leap
for ape kind! It’s an arrival that doesn’t go to wholly to plan and there’ll be
a flying chimp and a big explosion. I’ve opted for an explosion because I think
it’ll be great way of putting the interaction of Painter’s Oils with the canvas
to the test.
But the main point of this series is to
learn a new package, have fun and grow as an artist. And hopefully encourage a
few other artists to find some time to try out Painter IX and its realistic oil
paint features too.
