Pencilling a comic figure (1 of 3)

Frazer Irving shows the primary stages in creating and illustrating a comic book character using today’s methods

The creation of comics has changed over the years, with new technologies moving in and altering how art is made, opening the potential for new avenues of exploration. My personal method of production has changed due to this, and this tutorial will give you a glimpse of how I (and maybe you as well) can create art using the tools at hand.

Almost all of the art I produce is done on my dual 2.5GHz G5, using a 30-inch Apple monitor and an A3 Wacom tablet. The methods I use reflect this, although a down-sized setup will also do the trick.

I no longer use pencils to draw, but I do use brushes, so a printer is needed, as well as a steady table. What you will need is a computer, Photoshop, a monitor and a drawing tablet; obviously the bigger the better, but any size will do, really.

I’m going to create and illustrate a piece called Cosmic Biker-Chica, in my current style. It combines traditional elements of illustration with modern Photoshop contributions. This first section concerns the penciling of the character, from scribble to inking-ready art, using my own preferred method. So, Wacom pens at the ready…
