Watercolour, acrylic, digital, a steam-driven monster and a little girl are ingredients in this workshop from Dave Kendall...

The old Hammer Horrors have long held a fascination for me, as have the feel and mood of the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales. So I jumped at the chance to produce this piece, using traditional means but with the ability to make enhancements in Photoshop and Painter. My initial idea was to tackle the scene when Frankenstein’s monster meets the small child. But I realised the story would have more power if I kept it ambiguous; is the creature stalking this girl, or is she simply playing hide and seek with it? I’m not sure, but as my picture progressed I became convinced that he was a friendly monster. See if you agree.
